A transnational research collaboration network for bio-based materials innovations utilizing the boreal forest resources
The Boreal Alliance Network (the “Alliance”) is a non-profit international network of educational, research, and governmental organizations that are actively engaged in carrying out or promoting research activities in bio-based material innovations.
BACKGROUND
Aalto University, the University of British Columbia and VTT have joined their strong expertise in bio-based materials research by launching the Boreal Alliance in 2020. As the foundational partners, the Finnish FinnCERES Flagship and the BioProducts Institute at UBC spearheaded the development of its foundation to activate the transnational collaborative network. The Alliance has grown rapidly and welcomed several major European research organizations such as EMPA from Switzerland; Treesearch from Sweden; University of Vienna from Austria; and LUKE, UNITE Flagship, and University of Oulu from Finland.
OUR MISSION
The purpose of the Alliance is to promote collaborative development of bio-based materials research and its application on an international level. Our goals include:
- Becoming an independent science-based influencer aiming to provide science-based advice for decision-making towards the common vision of creating a more sustainable environment;
- Fostering a more favorable international environment for collaborative bio-based research;
- Enhancing the impact of Members’ research, programmatic convergence, concerted action and fostering innovation; and
- Expanding the financial opportunities available to Members to conduct their joint collaborative actions.
We aim to identify opportunities that translate bio-based materials science to sustainable innovations, and welcome interested partners to join the mission. Knowledge exchanges will be activated through visiting scholar programs, sharing research infrastructure access, and organizing joint events to name a few. Together, the Alliance will make a global impact in accelerating bio-based solutions development and innovations for a sustainable future.
